2011-2012

Some 8-A students were corresponding with ePals from Arizona, the USA. These are the reports by Sonya Popova

My epal is Morgan Zahne

Morgan was born on August 6, 1998 in Phoenix, Arizona. She lives with her mom and her brother. But generally she has two brothers.  Morgan is the youngest children in the family. She also has a Red German Shepherd named Bolt. Morgan has her own room, and a big back yard.
In her city, they don’t have big buildings like other cities, but it is very spacious, with not many people.
Her hobbies: she likes being with her friends and family, playing with her dog.
She told me that she wants to be a doctor because she wants to help people; also she likes to be a veterinarian because she loves animals.
They have a lot of holidays that are very similar to ours. She told me how they celebrate Halloween:
“Today on Monday October 31st we are celebrating a holiday called Halloween. Here kids, teenagers and adults dress up like a cartoon, another person, or everyday objects. This is also a day were people get to scare other people and, also getting candy from each house. This is how Halloween is here ...”
Also Morgan sent me a long letter about the Day of Thanksgiving. It was very interesting to learn about this holiday because we do not have it.
Morgan told me about how they celebrate Christmas and New Year:
“My family doesn’t have a tradition to celebrate New Year or Christmas. But on Christmas me and my mom and her boyfriend went to his family’s house ate and played games such as bingo, the elephant game and watched the basketball games. For New year me my mom and her boyfriend went to the mall, movies and ate at a restaurant.”
It was interesting to know about the winter in her city:
“In our town we hardly get snow since we live in the desert, but this year we got a lot of snow. In December it snowed for 3-4 days and didn’t stop, and here it was a surprise to us since, we hardly see snow here. The temperature was about 15 degrees and I had to bring in my dog so he wouldn’t freeze or get sick.”
They celebrate spring holidays, as well as we:
“We also celebrate Easter, and April Fools just as you do. But Easter is mostly for the young kids, but this year my family had Easter egg hunts for the babies, then the middle age kids, then the adults. April Fools is for people who want to fool other people, but this year not as many people did April Fools.”

Hello world!

Well, hello guys! My name is Pauline, but friends often call me Polly! I study in the Lyceum of Informational Technologies in Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine).
At the beginning of this school year, our teacher of English suggested  us  an interesting project: communication to e-pals from America. My friend was a girl of my age, her name’s Kenia and she comes from a small town called Holbrook (USA).

She looks like a real teenager: wearing skinny Jeans, bright shirts, and colorful shoes. Besides she loves doing trendy hairstyles and photographing on the phone herself!:)
I was shocked when learned that she has 3 brothers and 2 sisters! It’s amazing for me, because I have only one brother and some of my friends don't have any!

The climate in Holbrook is different from ours: it is very hot during the day and cold at night also in the morning. We have a quiet and smooth weather in comparison what they have.
Kenia adores sport and plays a lot of  ball games… She listens to hard and metal rock!
Here is link to presentation about her:http://prezi.com/zgf3genlzzjp/me-aka-skittles/

As for holidays, they celebrate Halloween, Christmas and New Year, Easter, and April Fools, and also Mother's and Father’s Days! Kenia adores Haloween:
“Today is Halloween(Oct. 31, 2011). I was wondering how you guys celebrate Halloween? If your wanting to know how we celebrate Halloween, We celebrate it by going house to house at night saying "trick-or-treat" and they give us some candy. We also wear some costumes. This year I am going to be a scene girl. Hopefully I hear how you celebrate it.”
Her family also celebrates Thanksgiving Day! They bring their apologies to each other, sometimes there is a parade on the streets, and in the evening Kenia’s family roast a large and delicious turkey. She says that it’s very yummy! :)

I find this a very friendly writing with her, I learned a lot, got interested in many things and finally I have a new friend in another corner of the world! And if you still do not have a pen friend - you have lost a lot!

Ukraine - Magical Moments Around the World Book

Hi Lyudmila,

I'm proud to announce that an anthology of Magical Moments has been published, and some of your students Magical Moments appear in the book.
The book will be traveling to schools, museums and other public places around the world. We will be able to learn of the books journey as it meets people and places in a travel blog on the website. Please tell me if you would like to host the book at your school.
You can view the book on the website in the following link:  http://www.magicalmoment.net/travelling-book

Below are the magical moments of your students that appear in the book that were sent on October 2009 and May 2010:

Peace & Joy,

Gal Kleinman

Magical Moments Around the World www.magicalmoment.net

These are some examples:

The Sun Was Running after Our Car

I’d like to tell you about my first dawn. I was so small; the world seemed interesting and incomprehensible. It was the beginning of the journey to the sea with my parents. And imagine - I saw the sun, which was running after our car! The reddest, the greatest and the most inconceivable sun in my life! Of course, that dawn was as usual as any day. But thanks to my child’s impressions, I remember that moment, and like the sun maybe more than it could be.

Monsters in My Closet

I look back on my childhood with memories of laughter, confusion, excitement, bewilderment, and sometimes nostalgic tears. When I was in the kindergarten, a cousin told her smaller sister and me that monsters lived in our bedroom closet. My mother explains how she recalls having to shut my closet door and leave the light on so that I could fall asleep until we moved from that particular flat. I remember thinking to myself (and truly believing....really believing!) when I spent the first night in our new home that there were finally no more monsters living in my closet.

I think that my childhood was perfect, but it is the funniest moment that happened to me.

Alina, age 16, Ukraine

My Family

Magical moments don’t last long. When you feel something amazing, it is going to disappear soon. But there are some people who are with you forever. It doesn’t matter if they are just near you or in your heart. These are the people who love you. This year I celebrated my birthday just with my family – parents and grandparents. It was a great night. Grandfather told stories, and we were talking about them. We laughed a lot.

I am not going to describe many details, because I know, that everybody, who will read some description of somebody’s relatives will think about his own. My life is full of misunderstanding, often of myself. But there are some people in whom I am sure. They are my relatives. They do everything to fill my life with magical moments. And if you have relatives, I want you to be attentive to them, though I often am not. Try not to miss another magical moment.

Andrey, age 16, Ukraine

I Like to Play in the School Theater

When I was in the second form we celebrated St. Valentine's Day. We performed a fairytale and I had a main role. I was so happy because I like to play in the school theater. My parents came to my party and they took a lot of photos. Now looking at the photos, I remember how we had fun after our play. We had a disco. Moreover, there was a big cake and a lot of lemonade!!! I was so happy. Than our parents and teachers went to the classroom and spoke a lot, while my friends and I went for a walk around the school. It was night. We didn’t pay any attention how late it was. We ran, shouted and had fun. It was magical!
When we went home, I had a beautiful dress on, held a lot of balloons and I understood that it was a magical moment in my life!

Asya, age 14, Ukraine

The Raven I Saved

It was a good winter day in December. I went to my music lesson, everything was OK. But suddenly I saw something on the snow. It was a raven. There was a lot of blood near it – the raven had broken its wing and leg. I decided to help this poor creature in its difficult condition. After my classes when I went home I saw it near the tree. I think, the raven tried to fly on it but couldn’t.I asked my father to help me. Together we caught it and brought it home. For a week the raven lived on our balcony. We fed it with different types of food and treated it very well. So the raven felt better. Its wing got healed and the raven started to jump on the balcony.
One day my father said, “If it wants, it can fly away,” and then he opened the window.
When I came back from school, I didn’t see it. However I saw our raven in the yard several times. And it is pleasant for me, that we saved its life. I will never forget it.

Kate, age 16, Ukraine

Childhood Memories

My magical moment is connected with my childhood. Childhood is a great time in my life. I remember that when I was a child I liked to play with dolls and toys very much. But most of all I liked to spend time with my family. For example, we went hiking in the woods and saw flowers and mushrooms, or had a rest and baked potatoes on a bonfire. Also we used to play volleyball or badminton if it wasn’t windy. There used to be my favorite food and favorite games. Those moments which we spent together, remains in my memory as magic moments of my life

Dear Teacher Friends,

For me personally and many of my colleagues in Germany, the 8th May has a very special meaning
each year. It is the "V-E Day", as it is called in the U.S. and England.
Unfortunately, a lot of school children today usually have no idea and links to this date and term. The more important it is to remember this day, we find - especially as German journalist! It is the date that officially marked the end of WW2, the final, unconditional surrender of the horrible Nazi regime and the end of Hitlers 'Third Reich' - 67 years ago.

Todd knows the memory that specifically links some of my closest editorial colleagues in Hamburg/Germany with American GI's (and  U.S. heroes) of the postwar period in Berlin/Germany. But also to all the other nations who fought for the downfall of that
incredibly cruel Nazi regime, we deeply thank from the bottom of our hearts on May 8th each year.

Perhaps you also briefly like to remind your students to this date tomorrow?
May 8th, the V-E Day. The date that officially made possible a fresh start in Europe, 67 years ago, thanks to the United States, England, and a lot of other nations!
All my (our) best to you and your students, where-ever you stay tomorrow,

Ilse

Dear Friends,
Most of us celebrate Easter End of this week. Therefore, heartfelt Easter greetings to all of you by Todd from the USA and me from Germany.
We wish to all teachers on this platform and their families peaceful and relaxing Easter holidays, wonderful Easter weather, and everything you may wish.
HAPPY   EASTER  2012  !

Ilse ( + on behalf of Todd)

P.S. This poem aptly describes the serious concerns of German kids + moms just before Easter in Hamburg ;-)

Sokrates and the Easter Basket
by Tom Mulhern

Here's a question (and I've been dying to ask it)
What's the right style for a proper Easter basket?

Should it be round or oval or square?
Should it be homemade or purchased somewhere?

Would an old milk carton, cut in half
Be OK, or just cause people to laugh?

Should the artificial grass be green, pink or blue?
How do I know what's the right thing to do?

But whether the basket is brand new or old
The key question is, how much candy will it hold?

Todd Kellaher, United States of America, and other our previous years partners are working on  a great project called Global Story-writing Students (GSS).
The GSS project can best be described as a fun way for learners of the English language to practice their teachings and exchange cultural as well as popular ideas and tales through a series of creatively written segments (or chapters) to a story that began  in the USA.

Dear Friends,
Jenny / Australia sent us a great Smilebox about the Harmony Day 2012 at her school in Adelaide/Australia today. She wrote:
" Today we celebrated Harmony Day (2 days early!!). It was a wonderful day.....our 400 students split into 18 "country" teams and spent the morning participating in cultural games, crafts and dancing. We finished off our celebrations with a shared lunch where students brought food from their culture such as Chinese spring rolls, Indian curry and laming tons!! We have children from 35 different cultures, so it is a wonderful day to celebrate our rich diversity.
Hope you enjoy the short smilebox. Jenny "

WOW, we now know each other nearly two and a half year, in which we exchanged so many thoughts, ideas, facts, and views. We laughed together about many things.
Often, we also shared some of our private sorrows, joys or worries during this time span among each other. So, somehow, a very close email relationship (and in some cases very private friendships) developed.
In this respect, I very privately wish you - virtually from the living room to living room - a wonderful, magic, and peaceful Christmas Eve 2011 this year, surrounded by all your loved ones!

Well, Christmas in Hamburg is always a very, very special time for the citizen of Hamburg. You know, in this city - the "gate to the world", as Hamburg is officially called  in Europe - people of more than 170 different nations of the world peacefully live together for many years. You can be sure that we also daily meet compatriots of your country in the streets of Hamburg.

BTW, I found out - just for fun -some months ago that almost every nation of Todd's teacher friends has a consulate or diplomatic mission in Hamburg :-) As of 2011, there were 103 consulates in Hamburg, ranked the third-largest in the world (after New York City and Hong Kong) and largest in Europe. But this only in passing. It is the diversity of all those different people, the differences of their great cultures, as well as their open-mindedness that characterizes this beautiful and beloved city permanently

I have tried to show you the wonderful feeling (when experiencing the days before Christmas in Hamburg) with a small Smilebox. It is also my tiny private Christmas gift 2011 to all my friends on Todd's great project globally.

Please use FULL SCREEN and your LOUDSPEAKERS
(and please excuse my usual typing/spelling/grammar/and-I-dont-know-what-else errors. Unfortunately, they seem to belong to me in English language like forky weather to
Hamburg or London ;-)))

*********************************************************

Also my husband, my children, all my office-colleagues and a lot of private friends from Hamburg
wish you a very

MERRCHRISTMAS

With warm regards and sincere thanks,

Ilse

The current school year we are not so active with Todd's GSS-project. Nevertheless, we’re still in touch with its teachers and students. Below you can read some information from them

TEACHERS’ DAY
In many countries, 'Teachers' Days' are intended to be special days for the appreciation of teachers; World Teachers' Day is celebrated across the world on October 5. Ever since the importance of teachers has been recognized by UNESCO, by adopting the “Recommendation concerning the status of teachers”, World Teachers' Day has been celebrated annually.

16 October = WORLD FOOD DAY

This year the World Food Day globally is under the official motto:
"FOOD PRICES - FROM CRISIS TO STABILITY".

http://www.fao.org/getinvolved/worldfoodday/en/

A special and very meaningful event that is celebrated at most U.S. schools once a year:
The MIX IT UP Day.

It is a great way to teach tolerance and simultaneously to provide a lot of fun. In the USA MIX IT UP Day officially will take place on 18 October this year. However, this very meaningful event is increasingly practiced by schools in many other countries around the globe, too.
Here are some reasons why U.S. students and teachers love their Mix It Up (Lunch) Day at school every year:
To have a lot of fun while the students excercise tolerance at the same time
  • To make new friends
  • To help students get along better
  • To break down barriers between groups of students
  • To learn more about other kids in school
  • To help children feel happier about themselves                                                               http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL1OUWDHEHk

Our ePal teacher CERASSELA / ROMANIA has sent some wonderful photos of the great peace event (PEACE ONE DAY) that her students in Ploiesti / Romania celebrated on 21 September (International Day of Peace) at her school.
